A customer who left me six months ago came back to complain to me yesterday.
Six months ago, his boss was unhappy because their website didn’t show up on AI engines like ChatGPT, Google AI overview and Google AI mode. The boss met a so call “AEO / GEO Expert” who claimed he could rank their site on these AI engines. This “AEO / GEO expert” even bragged that his AI-powered SEO was a hundred times faster than traditional SEO like ours.
The result? Six months later, their website is still nowhere to be found on ChatGPT , Google AI Overview or Google AI mode. To make the matter worse, the Google search rankings I built for him before are now falling.
I asked how much he spent. He said RM 40k to 50k over the last six months. (Yep, money wasted.)
Many SEO companies today promise to help you rank on AI engines. But like I wrote in my last post here, no one can guarantee this. When different people ask an AI the same question, the AI gives each person a different answer.
So, how can anyone promise your website will always show up in such scenario?
Also, while AI can make work faster, in the tech world, “faster” can easily turn into “spam.” If you let AI write your content and fix your site without knowing basic SEO rules—especially knowing what NOT to do—you aren’t being efficient; you are just spamming. That is why his Google rankings dropped— Google hates spam.
